Fernando Llorente revealed Swansea City’s successful bid to beat the drop felt “like we won a title”.
The Spaniard has enjoyed a glittering career which has included winning the World Cup and European Championship at international level, while he has won two league titles and cup in Italy with Juventus along with a Europa League trophy while at Sevilla.
But his debut season in the Premier League proved a testing time for the club, who secured their top-flight status with a game remaining following last weekend’s fixtures.
On a personal level, Llorente’s first year at the Liberty was hugely successful, with the striker taking his tally to 14 goals after finding the net in last Saturday’s win at Sunderland.
His performances and goals didn’t go unnoticed either, with Llorente claiming three awards at the club’s end-of-season function.
And as he adds the Best Newcomer, Top Scorer and Best Goal awards to his trophy cabinet, the 32-year-old admits seeing the Swans retain their Premier League status was as satisfying as lifting a title.
“We have fought a lot to stay in the Premier League, and we deserve to stay,” said Llorente.
“There have been many difficult moments this year, but I am very happy that we are in the Premier League for next season.
“It was very hard as we had to fight a lot, but it was worth it in the end.
“For me, it is like we won a title. That is how I felt on the day our status was secured.”
He added: “I have enjoyed my first season in the Premier League a lot. It’s an amazing league.
“I am very happy to have scored a lot of goals for the Swans. Now we look forward to the last game and finishing the season with a win.”
