Swansea City’s opening 5-0 win at QPR certainly raised eyebrows in the football fraternity – but one element of that glorious victory came as no surprise to Angel Rangel.
Two goals each from Michu and Nathan Dyer, along with a fifth and final goal from Scott Sinclair, finished off the Hoops in ruthless fashion.
Michu, full name Miguel Perez Cuesta, capped off a dream start to life as a Swan by finding the net twice on his debut.
It left pundits drooling over the midfielder’s quality finishing – his second goal in particular set the tongues wagging.
The Jack Army was hailing a new hero, Matador Michu as one national headline called him.
But for Rangel, the massive impact of his fellow countryman came as no shock.
“It’s not a surprise to us at all because we know what Michu is about,” explained Rangel, now in his sixth season at the Liberty. “He has come here to score goals, and that’s what he did on his debut.
“He couldn’t have much more on his debut – he even hit the crossbar, so he almost got a hat-trick.
“But he is someone capable of scoring a lot of goals. He scored 15 in La Liga last season for Rayo Vallecano, and those goals played a big part in them staying up.
“So we hope he can get a lot more for us this season.”
The victory at QPR rewrote a few new chapters in the Swans’s history books.
Not only was it their first victory at Loftus Road and a first on the opening day of the season in seven attempts, but it also marked their biggest top-flight win.
Summing up Saturday’s triumph, Rangel said: “We knew going to QPR – a place where we haven’t done well in the past – history wasn’t on our side but we changed that.
“A 5-0 result is incredible. The whole team put in a great performance and this is a great start. A lot of goals and a cleansheet – we couldn’t have asked for more.
“Individually everyone has played so well. We were very focused – you could see that in the way we defended and attacked.
“Since I’ve been here we have always lost on the first day of the season – so this was a perfect day.”
