Ashley Williams paid tribute to the long-serving members of the Jack Army after lifting the Capital One Cup, insisting: “They really deserve this.”
Williams and captain Garry Monk raised the cup aloft together after the Swans wrote another chapter in the club’s history books after claiming their first major trophy.
A 5-0 win over Bradford City at Wembley ensured the Swans success story continues, but Williams was quick to champion the support of those who stuck with the club during the days when going out of business – and then the Football League – were a harsh reality.
“There are supporters at this club who have been behind Swansea City for a long time and have seen the club during tough times,” said Williams, who joined the club from Stockport County in 2008.
“Now they can celebrate the club’s first major trophy. It’s a great reward for them, and I’m sure they are all really enjoying this success.”
Under Michael Laudrup, the Swans are enjoying the most successful season in the club’s history.
The Great Dane has delivered a first major piece of silverware, and the club are firmly in the top half of the season.
And Williams insists the job ahead is to keep the club pushing forward.
“We’ve had an unbelievable season,” added the Wales skipper. “We are in Europe and have silverware. It will be an experience for us and the fans playing around the continent.
“It would be a shame to drop off now, so we have a lot of work to do and see the season out and finish strongly.”
