Moore's goal gives Swans first tour victory

The Swans won their first match of their American tour with a hard-fought win over Ventura county Fusion.

Luke Moore struck the only goal of the game when he tucked home Danny Graham's cross after 21 minutes.

A minute earlier, Wayne Routledge had the ball in the net only to be called back for offside, while he was also brought down moments before the break only for the referee to award the visitors a corner.

Michael Laudrup named two different starting XIs for each half, looking to give his entire squad game time following on from the opening tour defeat to Colorado Rapids.

This proved a tough test against the Premier Development League outfit - the third tier in American football - but the visitors will be pleased with their victory.

Ventura County Fusion: Earl Edwards, Peter McGlynn, Omar Elmasri, Andy Iro, James Kiffe, Frankie Lopez, Ivan Morkovic, Jamiel Hardware, Kennedy Chongo, Gyasi Zardes, Chris Tsonis.

Swans (first half): Michel Vorm, Angel Rangel, Chico, Alan Tate, Ben Davies, Leon Britton, Jonathan de Guzman, Michu, Wayne Routledge, Luke Moore, Danny Graham.

It was the Fusion who created the first chance following a swift counter attack from a Swans corner. On raced Ivan Mirkovic in a two-on-one situation with Ben Davies, but Jonathan de Guzman raced back in time to clear the danger.

The Swans replied in the tenth minute as Danny Graham beat the offside trap and closed in on keeper Earl Edwards, but the striker chipped just wide.

Gyasi Zardes then saw his powerful drive fail to trouble Michel Vorm before, at the other end, Wayne Routledge's cross was spilled by Edwards.

Vorm was then at his best to dive low to prevent Jamiel Hardware's shot as the hosts took heart from their positive start.

The Swans found the net in the 20th minute as Routledge touched past keeper Edwards from Luke Moore's through ball before tapping home. Unfortunately for the visitors, Routledge was cruelly denied by the offside flag.

But they did get their goal 60 seconds as Graham's bouncing low cross was sidefooted past Edwards by Moore from eight yards out.

Ben Davies then tested Edwards as the young left-back charged forward after he was set free by Michu, but the keeper just managed to swat the ball away from danger.

Another curling Davies cross then found Moore, but he couldn't get a clean connection as the ball skidded wide while Michu's looping header also dropped past the far post.

The Swans continued to pile on the pressure, and when Graham had sent Routledge in on goal, the Swans thought they had worthy claims for a penalty as the winger went tumbling down under Edwards's challenge.

The referee, however, awarded a corner rather than a penalty in what proved the final act of the half.

HALF-TIME: Ventura County Fusion 0 Swans 1

Swans (second half): Gerhard Tremmel, Jazz Richards, Garry Monk, Ashley Williams, Fede Bessone, Kemy Agustien, Mark Gower, Andrea Orlandi, Gwion Edwards, Leroy Lita, Stephen Dobbie.

With the entire XI changed for the second half, the Swans made a promising start.

Mark Gower and Gwion Edwards linked up to allow Jazz Richards to send in a teasing cross which Edwards parried, with the alert Andrea Orlandi first to the loose. But his shot was excellently deflected inches wide of the near post.

Leroy Lita then fired over from close range after Stephen Dobbie's shot was cleared following another fine cross from Richards.

Dobbie and Lita then combined to tee up Gwion Edwards, but the young winger's curling right-footed shot beat the keeper and not the far post.

He was at it again moments later, latching onto Dobbie's threaded pass into the box but Edwards was denied by the onrushing keeper.

Fusion hit back by towering centre-back Andy Iro, who rose highest for a corner but saw his header bounce off the top of the crossbar.

It proved a brief respite as Gwion Edwards waltzed his way into the Fusion box before seeing his effort rise over the crossbar as the clocked ticked towards the final moments.

Andrea Orlandi's scuffed effort was then saved by Earl Edwards before Jazz Richards made an excellent last-ditch sliding tackle to deny the Fusion in stoppage time.
