Ladies do the double over Emlyn

Swansea City Ladies extended their Welsh Premier League unbeaten run of form to three matches against their West Wales visitors, with two swift early goals; four more then followed during the second half which also included a penalty, at Baglan's Evans Bevan playing fields.

With the Southern section leaders having registered comprehensive victories against Manorbier along with the students of UWIC, it was Newcastle Emlyn who was put to the sword; finding themselves a goal behind after only four minutes.

Lindsay Morgan had a scoring threat halted by visiting skipper Caroline Cooper, and from the resulting corner Sarah Adams sent the ball to the far side, to allow Swansea's attacking full back Lisa Anderson then intelligently picked out Morgan, for the Tredegar born frontrunner to fire a low shot into the bottom corner.

There was additional jubilation five minutes later, when the Swans profited once again from their second corner, with Adams delivering the flag kick into the goalmouth, and the advancing Natalie Ashford made no mistake, confidently connecting with a crisply struck shot.

Following that double setback, the Ceredigion League outfit began to defend in depth, allowing Swansea to maintain possession for a lengthy period, but also frustrating then, with ten players virtually camped in their own territory to prevent additional goals from being conceded.

The Swans continued to run the show as the first half continued and they should have bagged additional goals with firstly a Rachel Rowe shot being intercepted by Cooper, then the constantly active goalkeeper Lisa Thomas smothered a Laura-May Walkley drive on the goal-line.

With five minutes of the opening half remaining, Morgan was unlucky not to add to her match opener, despatching a fifteen-yard goalbound effort, which was deflected away by Thomas, following a swift attacking threat involving Ashford and Stephanie Turner.

Newcastle Emlyn continued to repel the Swansea strikeforce until the hour mark, then it was Sina Raphael who handled the ball on the goal-line, to deny leading goals-scorer Walkley, Ashford then stepped forward to superbly plant the spot kick beyond the reach of Thomas, into the bottom corner of the net.

The attacking tempo was gradually increased by Swansea, with former Pentrehafod Comprehensive student Rachel Rowe displaying her visual awareness to great effect, sending a twenty yard angled shot beyond the stretching keeper.

With Alicia Powe having been introduced in place of Tija Richardson, the Welsh international set up Rowe for her second goal after 78 minutes, scoring with a right footed finish following a surging run into the penalty area.

Swansea maintained their attacking authority and Adams was unfortunate to be denied a goal by the thickness of the crossbar, with her narrow angled drive rebounding off the woodwork.

With the clock ticking down and four minutes remaining, Swansea once again unlocked the Newcastle Emlyn defence, with Turner putting the shine on a polished performance, heading home from eight yards, from a left sided Walkley delivery.

Throughout the ninety minutes it was sole visiting striker Lisa Lewis who awaited attacking distribution from her supporting teammates, but there was little service from midfield to allow her to test Swansea's defensive capabilities.

"It was a difficult game, despite the flattering scoreline, mainly because of the defensive attitude of the opposition, but fortunately the players kept to a pattern and the passing along with the possession was simply first class", said Swansea City Ladies manager, Ian Owen.

"Right from the off, it was all one way traffic, with some really good finishing, but it was not about the scoreline, it was just to make sure that were in tune with what's required for the second half of the league campaign in the New Year".

"With us having established a swift two goal lead, Newcastle Emlyn then set out to defend for the rest of the game, with a solitary striker camped in our half".

Owen added, "Although we dominated possession, sometimes it can be really hard in terms of scoring goals, but after the interval, we remained focused and were rewarded with a penalty and another three goals at this midway stage of our six match league programme".
