Coping with the pressure

Posted on: Wed 03 Mar 2010

Swansea City's newest recruit, David Cotterill, couldn't wait to find striker Craig Beattie when news of his permanent transfer from Sheffield United broke last week.

Having put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year contract that will keep him at the Liberty Stadium until 2013, the former loan recruit became the club's record signing as £600,000 wired its way into the Bramall Lane bank account.

The winger had no idea the deal was a club record until he was told by the club's media department that he topped the initial £500,000 transfer of Beattie from West Brom.

While the Scot could eventually reclaim the title he took from £400,000 recruits Ashley Williams and Nathan Dyer at the start of the season if the £300,000-worth of add-ons kick in, the fact was irrelevant as Cotterill raced off to wind up his teammate with some classic dressing room banter.

After all, the record tag isn't exactly going to weigh too heavily on the 22-year-old's shoulders. At just 18, the Cardiff-born Welsh international secured a £2million transfer from Bristol City to Premier League Wigan Athletic. Then came a move to Sheffield United in an undisclosed fee believed to worth well over the £1million mark.

"I've dealt with big things, so I'm not really worried about the transfer fee,'' explained Cotterill.

"I've coped with a big money move to the Premiership at a young age. While I lost my way a little bit with the added pressure, one thing I learnt was that I just needed to concentrate on my football and not everything else surrounding it.

"But things like that happen and you have to learn from it. Sometimes you go to the Premiership and you have to come down to go back up.

"But as far as I am concerned, I've joined the best footballing side in the Championship. I've come here to play football and I aim to keep working hard, get myself in the starting XI on a regular basis and chip in with a few more goals.

"It's not going to be easy because there are some good players here and the team is doing well.

"But I hope to stay here for a long time and help the club move on. There is no reason why we can't finish in the top six this season.

"When you look at Burnley, I don't see them as a bigger club than Swansea, and they got promoted last year."

Cotterill's immediate aim though is to start make Swansea's staring XI on a regular basis. Having just turned 22, Swansea is already his fourth professional club.

"It's a lot of clubs for a player of my age, but hopefully I can stay and settle here for a good while and help the club move on.

"The style of football at Swansea is completely different from what I was used to at Sheffield United. Swansea pass it whereas United play a more direct game, so I have to adapt to the change.

"The manager has told me to be more aggressive and you have to take note of what he says because he has won two Champions League finals.

"Whatever he says I will be taking on board because I'm trying to improve as a player and hopefully I will be talking to you again in three years time having signed another contract here.

"Coming home with my wife and little one has helped me relax and I'm sure it will help my game in the short and long term.''

While that family home is still based in Cardiff, the Ely boy has already started spreading the Jack message in Bluebird country.

"The first time I came down to Swansea to watch the game against Derby, everyone was so friendly,'' he added.

"Welsh people are very friendly, but when you're from Cardiff you think that the Swansea people might not be very nice,'' he joked. "But I've told everyone that Swansea people are very nice and I'm enjoying my time so far.

"Hopefully I can repay their faith in me and get a few more goals. I've set myself a seven-goal target this season; I think that's okay for a winger.''

And having opened his account with a cracker against today's opponents in the FA Cup a fortnight ago, Swans fans will be hoping there's plenty more like that to come.
