Swansea City had two players involved for their countries on Saturday in the first of two World Cup qualifying dates this week.

Ashley Williams played the full 90 minutes of Wales' opening Group Four victory over Azerbaijan at the Millennium Stadium while fellow defender Dennis Lawrence represented Trinidad & Tobago in their 1-1 draw with Guatemala.

But there was to be no action for Owain Tudur Jones, not even named amongst the substitutes for the match against the Azeri, and Jason Scotland who failed to appear off the bench in Port of Spain.

John Toshack made six changes to the side that lost 2-1 against Georgia last month and started no fewer than five players who are still eligible for the Under-21's.

Both sides started brightly but it was Wales that dominated possession and had the better chances during the opening half of the game.

Wayne Hennessey was called into action on one occassion when he was forced to make a diving save to his left to push the ball away for the corner but the better opportunities have fallen for John Toshack's side.

The returning Gareth Bale had a chance early on and on 28 minutes Chris Gunter was denied from six-yards courtesy of a last ditch tackle. Jason Koumas also forced the Azeri 'keeper Agayev into conceding a corner with a well struck shot just after the 30 minute mark while David Edwards fired over 10 minutes later.

The second period lacked action for the first 20 minutes, that was before Tottenham's Chris Gunter was brought down inside the area by Rashad Sadikhov and Macedonian official Aleksandr Stavrev awarded a penalty.

Up-stepped Wigan's Jason Koumas but he sent his spot kick straight at Agayev in the Azeri goal and the Hazar Lenkoran stopper saved from the rebound, while in the aftermath Brazilian-born midfielder Fabio Luis Ramim was dismissed after picking up a second yellow card.

Koumas found space to shoot straight at the 'keeper with 15 minutes remaining while Branimir Subasic of Red Star Belgrade flashed a shot wide of Hennessey's goal shortly afterwards.

Substitute Sam Vokes was keeping himself busy in the Welsh attack following his 72nd minute introduction and with just 10 minutes left to play met Gareth Bale's pin-point cross but saw his header pushed over by Agayev for a corner.

From the resulting flag-kick, taken by Jason Koumas, the ball was allowed to bobble inside the six-yard box and Vokes was at hand to stab home past the 'keeper for his first senior international goal.

Wales: Wayne Hennessey, Chris Gunter, Craig Morgan, Ashley Williams, Gareth Bale, Carl Fletcher, Simon Davies (C), David Edwards (Sam Vokes, 72'), Jason Koumas (Carl Robinson, 89'), Joe Ledley, Robert Earnshaw (Ched Evans, 62').

Carlos Gallardo cancelled out Keon Daniel's effort as Guatemala forced a last-minute 1-1 draw over Trinidad and Tobago in their CONCACAF Zone Group A Semi-Final qualifier.

Daniel had netted his third goal in the last two qualifiers when unleashing a thunderous strike past visiting stopper Trigueno six minutes from time, but it wasn't to be as the home defence was caught napping as substitute Marco Papa's low free-kick was flicked past Marvin Phillip by Gallardo.

Both sides took a while to settle but Trinidad did have first-half chances through Cornell Glen, Carlos Edwards and Dwight Yorke while there were also chances for the two teams in the second period before Daniel's opener on 84 minutes, a goal that looked to have won the tie for the Soca Warriors, but celebrations were halted in injury-time when Gallardo grabbed the leveller.

Trinidad: Marvin Phillip, Clive Leon, Avery John, Keyeno Thomas, Dennis Lawrence, Carlos Edwards (Anthony Wolfe, 46'), Cyd Gray, Keon Daniel, Densill Theobald (Andre Toussaint, 46'), Cornell Glen (Kerry Babtise, 88'), Dwight Yorke.

Not Used: Osei Telesfod, Jason Scotland, Julius James, Jan-Michael Williams.

Referee: Roberto Moreno (Panama)
