Young reserve side beaten by Yeovil

Posted on: Fri 16 Jan 2009

A young second string side began their totesport.com Combination New Year campaign with a disappointing 3-1 home defeat against Yeovil on Wednesday.

With the Swans anxious to cancel out their 3-0 defeat against Yeovil at Huish Park last month, they attempted to make a positive start with Casey Thomas linking with Daniel Alfei on seven minutes, but he saw his threatening cross cleared by Yeovil's Swedish trialist, Thomas Magnusson.

There was another positive opening created eight minutes later, but it was Robert Fitzgerald who denied Chris Jones a scoring opportunity. Chad Bond then delivered the resulting corner into the penalty area only for goalkeeper Albin Kakjetovic to apply a punched clearance.

The Glovers' first real opportunity to move ahead arrived on 24 minutes with Kieran Murtagh finding the support of Harry Norwell, only for the midfielder to have his angled drive collected by goalkeeper Rhys Wilson.

Within a minute of that goal threat the action switched to the opposite end and Thomas was unfortunate in not making an impression, with his rising shot saved by the Yeovil 'keeper.

The West Country outfit finally made the breakthrough on 26 minutes with a 25-yard free-kick from Andre McCollin, flashing into the net just beyond the reach of Wilson.

Four minutes later, the lively McCollin was again displaying a quick burst of speed into Swansea territory, shaking off the attention of Ben Adelsbury to see his shot from the edge of the penalty area deflect into the net off the inside edge of the upright.

Yeovil continued to increase the attaching tempo, adding a third goal just before the interval, when a corner from Ashley Clarke was headed into the path of Fitzgerald who steered the ball in from close range.

Colin Pascoe introduced Lee Lucas and Matthew Wright at the beginning of the second-half in an attempt to seek a route back into the game.

Just before the hour mark, Jones weaved an attacking path forward, shaking off a challenge from Harry Nodwell and then made progress to the edge of the penalty area only for Magnusson to make a timely tackle to dispossess the lively Swansea front runner.

Midway into the second half the Swans increased the momentum with Welsh youth international Jazz Richards seeking out Lucas, but his piercing 20-yard shot flew narrowly wide of the woodwork.

With a minute of the match remaining, Jones once again attempted to cause problems to the Yeovil defence and, after Magnusson produced an ill timed tackle on the Swansea player; it was Chad Bond who blazed the resulting penalty into the corner of the Yeovil net.
