Young Swans hold experienced Robins

Posted on: Tue 07 Apr 2009

There was a spirited performance by a young Swansea City reserve side at Bristol City tonight as they held their hosts to a 2-2 draw.

Following a goalless first-half it was the home side that took the lead early in the second period through Peter Styvar but Daniel Sheehan levelled matters moments later.

The Robins had chances to re-take the lead but the next goal in fact fell to Adam Orme whose fierce strike gave Swansea the lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.

But they were denied a first victory on the road this season when a Lee Trundle penalty rescued a point for Bristol City.

A young side was named for the totesport.com Combination clash at Ashton Gate with 19-year-old forward Chris Jones the only player with first-team experience.

The remainder of the starting eleven consisted of first and second year scholars but there was a place at left-back for Ben Davies who is still a part of the Under-16's.

Bristol City's side consisted of no fewer than seven first-team players including former Swans Lee Trundle and Izzy Iriekpen.

Robins: Stephen Henderson; Joe Edwards, James Wilson, Izzy Iriekpen, Danny Ball (Ashley Kington, 66'), Tristan Plummer, Gavin Williams, Marvin Elliott, Rob Stambolziev, Peter Styvar (Marlon Jackson, 57'), Lee Trundle.

Not Used: Tom Bradley (GK), Nathan Livings, Joe Lennox.

Swans: David Cornell; Daniel Sheehan, Steven Berry, Jamie Grimes, Ben Davies, Keiran Howard, Jazz Richards, Lee Lucas (Anthony Finselbach, 82'), Adam Orme, Chris Jones, Matthew Wright (Joe Harris, 72').

Not Used: Rhys Wilson (GK), Daniel Alfei.

It was the home side that dominated large periods of the first-half and had chances through Rob Stambolziev, Peter Styvar and Trundle with David Cornell forced into making some key saves.

Chris Jones had the Swans' best chance early on when he shot wide of Stephen Henderson's goal while Lee Lucas volleyed over the top mid-way through the half.

Lucas fancied his chances with an audacious chip onto the roof of the net early in the second period but it was the home side that took the lead through Slovakian international Peter Styvar whose shot deflected past Cornell off the leg of Steven Berry.

Their lead, however, only lasted two minutes as Daniel Sheehan converted inside the area from Lucas' right-sided cross, but the Robins went straight back on the offensive with substitute Marlon Jackson's shot smothered by the impressive Cornell.

Rob Stambolziev fired over while Trundle saw his free-kick saved on 80 minutes before Adam Orme shocked the home crowd with a powerful half volley past Henderson from Chris Jones' cross seven minutes from time.

But they were denied a third consecutive win as Trundle levelled from the spot inside the last five minutes after Berry pulled him down inside the area.

David Cornell then capped off a fantastic evening between the sticks as he pushed a Trundle header onto the post in the dying moments of the game.
