Pengelli United 1 Swans XI 4

Posted on: Fri 31 Jul 2009

A young Swansea City side left it late to seal their first pre-season victory against a determined Pengelli United side.

Tony Pennock named a team of first and second-year scholars for the clash at a wet Golden Grove Park in Grovesend and were pushed all the way by their hosts before clinching the win.

Kurtis March was the only player missing after picking up an injury at Farnborough last week which resulted in Scott Tancock stepping up from the Under-16's to take his place amongst the substitutes.

The rain lashed down before kick-off but as referee Neil Morgan got things underway the elements eased and by the fifth minute the Swans were in the driving seat.

A wicked right-sided cross by skipper Daniel Alfei, on stand-by for next month's Wales Under-21 qualifier against Hungary, was met first time by the acrobatic effort of Jordan Prosser and the forward found the bottom corner of the net.

Alfei also made an important last ditch tackle in defence before Lee Lucas came close to adding a second on 15 minutes, only to see his effort saved.

Adam Orme failed to connect properly with Sam Rose-Miles' flick 10 minutes later but with half an hour played the dogged Carmarthenshire League outfit were on level terms.

The Swans saw a free-kick in a dangerous position cleared and on the counter attack Matthew Whatley was out muscled by a Pengelli striker whose initial shot was saved by Rhys Wilson, but the Wales Under-17 'keeper couldn't do anything about the follow up which slid into the bottom corner.

Orme twice came close to restoring the Swans' lead while the forward set-up Prosser on the stroke of half-time but he shot wide of the target.

The visitors made a strong start to the second period and on the hour found themselves back in front through Charlie Kasler, the midfield acquisition from Watford striding forward before launching an unstoppable shot which found the top of the net, with the aid of a deflection.

Kasler struck the post with a similar effort 17 minutes from time but two Rose-Miles goals during the closing stages made the game safe - the first following more architectural work by Kasler and the second after fine build-up play down the left through substitutes Anthony Finselbach and Gwion Edwards.

The latter's cross cleared to the feet of Rose-Miles who finished coolly from eight-yards.

Swans XI: Rhys Wilson, Daniel Alfei (Joe Walsh, 46'), Matthew Whatley (Scott Tancock, 82'), Steven Berry, Ben Davies, Lee Lucas (Gwion Edwards, 71'), Jordan Smith, Charlie Kasler, Adam Orme (Anthony Finselbach, 46'), Sam Rose-Miles, Jordan Prosser.

Attendance: 150 (est)
