Black and white day for Besian

Posted on: Fri 13 Aug 2010

Swansea City fans will have the chance to pay an emotional tribute to former striker Besian Idrizaj at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

The popular 22-year-old died suddenly in May of a heart attack at home in Austria.

In a mark of respect, the club will be staging a minute's silence before their Championship game with Preston.

Fans will also have the chance to make it extra special by holding up new edition black and white scarves during the silence in memory of the former Swansea and Liverpool striker and Austrian Young Player of the Year.

The club is making thousands of scarves available for the day at a cost price of just £2.50 (the club will make no money from the scarf offfer). The Evening Post is also backing the black and white day tribute by printing a 50p off voucher in today's paper.

"There are certain moments in life when even the most passionate football fans are forced to put the beautiful game into perspective,'' said a Swansea City spokesperson.

"Sadly, that was the case in the summer when we lost Besian so young.

"His death greatly affected everyone at the club from players, staff and the fans who have already paid numerous heart-warming tributes to him via the official website and 'Besian's Gate' in the South Stand.

"The players and staff have also held their own personal service with club chaplain Kevin Johns, while his No 40 shirt has been officially retired as a mark of respect.

"But the reason we've left the main minute's silence until Saturday's game is because Besian deserves a full Liberty Stadium to honour his short but successful life.

"For Besian to look down and see thousands of Swans fans holding up their black and white scarf will be the perfect tribute. We know he'll have a smile on his face.''

The club will also be remembering former club shop manager Myra Powles, director Harry Hyde and player Len Emmanuel who all passed away recently.

The black and white scarves will be available from the club shop today and inside and outside the stadium on Saturday.
