Loveridge strike seals point for reserves

Posted on: Wed 08 Sep 2010

James Loveridge scored the goal that earned the Swans' reserve side their first point of the season against Swindon.

His strike just after half-time cancelled out Josh Parsons first-half opener for the visiting Robins.

First-year scholar Loveridge, the son of ex-Swan Jimmy, was fed into the area by Casey Thomas and fired low beyond Phil Smith to find the bottom corner.

The striker from Llanelli did have chances to win it late on but the second string can be content with a point against a more experienced Swindon side.

Trialist goalkeeper Yves Makaku-Makalambay was handed a starting place.

The 24-year-old former Chelsea shot stopper was part of a youthful Swans line-up as they were bidding to put their opening league defeat at Torquay behind them.

Tony Pennock took charge of the side in Alan Curtis' absence with Joe Walsh, Scott Donnelly and Casey Thomas the only other professionals in the squad.

A youthful Swans team started well but neither side were able to conjure any clear cut chances early on.

The first opportunity fell to Robins' striker Thomas Dosevvi - a Togolege international who was part of the squad whose bus was attacked at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year - he fired wide and Matthew Clarke saw his effort blocked.

Trialist Yves Makabu-Makalambay had very little to do in terms of shot stopping but, with 26 minutes played, he was beaten by Josh Parsons.

The goalkeeper's former Hibernian team mate, Irish international Alan O'Brien, left players standing as his pace saw him reach the byline before crossing; skipper Nathan Thompson missed it but Parsons made no mistake from four-yards.

Parsons was close to adding a second immediately afterwards but saw his shot fly over, leaving Makalambay to climb over the barrier and reach underneath to reclaim the ball.

The Swans fought back with Scott Tancock inches away from levelling from a corner, Scott Donnelly tried his luck from 40-yards but fell just short, while Makalambay was forced into making his first stop on the stroke of half-time to deny Will Evans.

Half-Time: Swans 1 Swindon 1

The Swans came out on top at the start of the second period and within eight minutes they were back on level terms.

Casey Thomas fed in young striker James Loveridge from the right and with his first time effort the first-year scholar fired across Phil Smith and found the bottom corner.

The son of former Swan Jimmy Loveridge, James almost added a second on the hour as he raced onto Donnelly's long clearance forward only to overhit the ball, while the Llanelli product shot wide moments later after being put through by Charlie Kasler.

The Swans were enjoying the upper hand in the closing stages and, despite Dosevvi firing over for Swindon, Charlie Kasler's ferocious drive got the better of Smith but flew just wide.
