Swansea City's chase for the Championship got up to full speed again after a battling victory at the Memorial Stadium.

Second-half goals from Trinidad & Tobago duo Dennis Lawrence and Jason Scotland (penalty) sent the Swans nine points clear at the top of League One and eased the promotion nerves with just nine games to go.

As Swansea's three-game wobble without a win came to an abrupt end on a difficult pitch, the only down side saw Man United loan signing Febian Brandy sent-off five minutes from time after coming on as a second-half substitute.

Bristol Rovers: Phillips, Lescott, Anthony, Coles, Jacobson, Lines, Campbell, Disley, Haldane, Rigg, Lambert. Subs: Walker, Williams, Carruthers, Hinton, Reece

Swansea City: de Vries, Rangel, Austin, Tate (c), Lawrence, Butler, Pratley, Bodde, Robinson, Duffy, Scotland. Subs: Britton, Bauza, Tudur Jones, Way, Brandy.

Ref: Uriah Rene

Swans boss Roberto Martinez made three changes to the side that crashed 4-2 at Northampton on Saturday.

There was one forced change with former Rovers defender Kevin Austin coming in for the injured Marcos Painter (hamstring) at left-back.

The two other changes saw Darren Pratley coming in for Leon Britton in midfield as Roberto stuck with a 4-4-2 formation. Britton had to be content with a place on the bench.

There was also a rare league start for striker Darryl Duffy who replaced Guillem Bauza alongside top scorer Jason Scotland up front.

Bauza joined Britton on the bench, while there was also a place for Owain Tudur Jones, named in the full Welsh squad this week, following his long-standing injury problems.

Skipper Garry Monk (back) was still out with a back injury.

The Swans, with a six-point gap at the top of the table despite picking up just one point from the last nine, faced a Bristol side in 16th place but with plenty of games in hand following their FA Cup exploits.

Manager Paul Trollope named an unchanged side from the one that lost 1-0 to Cheltenham on Saturday.

It meant Sean Rigg and Rickie Lambert continued their partnership in attack, while Byron Anthony and Danny Coles lined up in the centre of defence.

Match action

The Swans looked to rediscover their form on a poor pitch at the Memorial Stadium. But they were backed by nearly 1,000 Swans fans that had made the short trip up the M4.

After a scrappy opening, the home side created the first half chance when Joe Jacobson's shot flew across the face of goal where a surprised Rickie Lambert headed well wide.

At the other end, Darryl Duffy was determined to grasp his chance as he latched on to a pass from Darren Pratley after a good run that beat the offside trap. But Duffy fired into the side netting when he had more time than he thought.

Swansea had to defend in numbers with 15 minutes gone as Rovers throw a deep cross into the box. But Dorus de Vries got good distance on his punch before Danny Coles headed the clearance back over the bar.

Lambert had a strong penalty appeal turned down two minutes later after a challenge from Dennis Lawrence, before Duffy nearly caught Rovers on the break as great control and a fine run took him clear only for the striker to fire just wide.

Scotland created space for himself for his first shot with 27 minutes gone, but goalkeeper Steve Phillips saved easily.

A minute later he was given a tougher test when Andy Robinson fired a fierce effort toward the far corner. But Phillips was equal to the task as he palmed Robinson's shot behind for a corner which came to nothing.

The game, while remaining scrappy on a difficult surface, opened up again in the latter stages of the first-half as Rovers finished strongly.

They had another shout for a penalty two minutes from time when Lewis Haldane went down after a challenge from Angel Rangel. But instead Haldane found himself in referee Uriah Rene's notebook for a dive.

Half-time: Rovers 0 Swans 0

Both sides remained fully committed at the start of the second-half, although there was still little football being played.

Lambert fired wide of de Vries' post early on before Scotland blazed a shot high over the bar and the stand with 49 minutes gone.

One goal looked good enough to win a tight encounter as Swansea were forced to sacrifice their short passing philosophy for a longer game.

It nearly came in the 59th minute as Haldane out-muscled Alan Tate only to screw his shot wide.

Two minutes later and Chris Lines saw his cross-shot pushed behind for a corner by de Vries before Swansea cleared the danger

Robinson hit back for the visitors as he was fouled 25-yards out. The midfielder picked himself up to curl a fine free-kick into the side netting.

And with 25 minutes remaining, Swansea made a double substitution as Leon Britton and Febian Brandy replaced Pratley and Duffy respectively as the game started to get stretched with the tired legs kicking in.

Swansea started to pick the tempo up as Tom Butler forced Phillips to parry his shot, before Rovers made their first change in the 71st minute with Andy Williams replacing Sean Rigg.

But a minute later and Swansea were ahead. Rangel was fouled by Haldane wide on the right. From the free-kick, Butler provided a great cross and big Dennis Lawrence arrived late to plant a superb downward header beyond Phillips.

With 77 minutes gone and Swansea were 2-0 ahead after a great run into the box by Febian Brandy was halted by a challenge by Byron Anthony.

The defender looked to have taken enough of the ball, but to the disgust of the home fans, the referee pointed to the spot and Jason Scotland hammered home his 25th goal of the season.

Brandy was in the thick of the action again with five minutes to go, but for all the wrong reasons as the Manchester United loan signing was dismissed for a challenge on Danny Coles.

The Rovers defender retaliated by grabbing Brandy around the neck area, but was lucky to escape a red card himself.

Swansea immediately sent on Owain Tudur Jones for Robinson, but the three points were already in the bag.
