Swansea made just one change from the side that went top of League One with a 1-0 win over Hartlepool last Tuesday with Alan Tate coming in for skipper Garry Monk in the heart of defence.

Monk was forced to sit out the game with a one-match ban for five bookings.

Manager Roberto Martinez kept the same formation with Jason Scotland as the central striker and Andy Robinson and Paul Anderson supporting from the flanks.

It left Darren Pratley, Leon Britton and Ferrie Boddie to control the middle of midfield.

Northampton started the game in 17th place and were without a league win in four games.

The home side created their first chance in the sixth minute when Anderson delivered a deep cross, but Scotland's header flew just wide in the blustery conditions.

Robinson was also showing plenty of promise down the left flank as he fed Scotland on the edge of the area. The Trinidad striker displayed good skill to lose his marker, but his shot was blocked with 13 minutes gone.

And it was Scotland who broke the deadlock in the 17th minute. Anderson's cross was only half cleared and Britton found Scotland who fired home a volley into the top corner.

A minute later and Scotland turned provider when he beat the offside trap before pulling a cross back for Darren Pratley to drill home Swansea's second.

Swansea continued to dominate proceedings and nearly snatched a third in the 40th minute when Robinson fed Scotland, but Mark Bunn was quickly out to smother the ball.

Half-time: Swans 2 Cobblers 0

Swansea were full of confidence at the start of the second half as Robinson had the ball in the back of the net within five minutes after meeting a cross from Bodde, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

The home side were passing the ball superbly now as Pratley fired just wide from the edge of the area.

A minute later and Bodde skimmed the same post with a shot from 25 yards as Swansea continued to dominate.

Scotland forced a great save out of Bunn in the 64th minute after Northampton looked to have weathered the storm.

Then Bodde hit an unbelievable strike from all of 35 yards which flew just wide before the home side introduced fresh legs with65 minutes gone as Tom Butler replaced Robinson.

Swansea kept driving forward and Bunn tipped another effort from Anderson around the post before the third duly arrived in the 67th minute when Swansea won a penalty.

Guy Branston was adjudged to have fouled Dennis Lawrence inside the area as Anderson swung in a corner and Scotland stepped up to fire home his second of the night.

Swansea did take their foot off the gas slightly as Dorus de Vries was forced to beat away a swerving shot from Brad Johnson with 74 minutes gone.

Scotland was desperate to grab his hat-trick as he forced another save out of Bunn, before Anderson broke the offside trap only to be denied by Bunn again.

With the points in the bag from a classy display, Guillem Bauza and Kevin Austin came on for Scotland and Marcos Painter.
