Two goals from striker Guillem Bauza sent the Swans flying into the Championship with a battling victory at Priestfield.

The Swans were trailing a Dennis Oli opener after 22 minutes, but two goals late in the first-half from the Spaniard sent the Swans into the second tier of English football for the first time in 24 years.

Around 1500 fans were celebrating at Gillingham while back at the Liberty Stadium 1700 Swans fans were also ecstatic watching the game as it was beamed back live.

The name of Swans boss Roberto Martinez was on everyone's lips as the Spaniard made the dreams come true.

The victory, which took the Swans to 86 points, also broke the club's 85-point record set in the 1999-00 season.

With Doncaster beating Swindon 2-0 last night, the Swans travel to Priestfield looking to secure the one win they need for promotion to the Championship.

And they were given an extra boost before kick-off with the news that second-placed Carlisle had lost 3-2 to play-off contenders Leeds United.

The Swans made three changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Carlisle in midweek with Marcos Painter, Paul Anderson and Guillem Bauza coming in for Kevin Austin, Tom Butler and Febian Brandy.

Match action

Swansea showed plenty of promise in the opening stages, but it was the home side who took a grip on the game as Roberto's men were forced to defend for long spells.

Gillingham should have opened the scoring after 12 minutes when Dennis Oli's long-range effort deflected off Alan Tate to Simeon Jackson unmarked in the box. But the youngster blazed over from close range.

The home side didn't make the same mistake twice 10 minutes later when Nicky Southall found himself in space on the right wing. The full-back delivered a cross which Swansea failed to clear and the ball fell to Dennis Oli to fire through a crowded box and beyond Dorus de Vries into the bottom corner to make it 1-0.

Oli and Wales international Andrew Crofts came close soon after as Swansea were struggling to get their passing game going.

But just when Swansea were starting to wonder if it was going to be another disappointing day at Priestfield where they had lost six of their last eight games visits, Guillem Bauza turned the game on its head.

With 44 minutes gone, a long-range efforts from Andy Robinson was spilled by goalkeeper Derek Stillie. Midfielder Darren Pratley went in bravely to challenge for the loose ball which popped up nicely for Bauza to tap home from close range.

Then two minutes into first-half injury-time and the Swans were ahead.

Again Robinson was the provider. A probing run down the left saw him cut inside three players before firing a powerful shot at Stillie. The 'keeper blocked his effort to the edge of the area where Bauza chested the ball down and fired a great shot across Stillie and into the far corner.

Half-time: Gills 1 Swans 2

Gillingham enjoyed most of the possession after the break as Swansea's defence soaked up the pressure before replying on the counter-attack.

Clear-cut chances were scarce, however, at both ends.

Jackson and Donovan Simmonds both had half-chances, but Bauza's brace had already done the damage and Swansea eased their way into the Championship before celebrating with the fans at the end.

Now for the title.
