Roberto Martinez admitted Swansea City had defensive lessons to learn after their Spanish tour opened with a 4-0 defeat by Espanyol.

Swansea matched the La Liga outfit in the first half last night and were unlucky to go in 1-0 down.

But after mass changes on both sides at the interval, Swansea fell away and finished up well beaten as Espanyol's multi-million-pound stars let rip.

''It doesn't matter whether you are Premier League team or a La Liga team, you don't want to concede goals,'' Martinez said.

''Espanyol have great talent, but we cannot be happy with the goals we conceded.

They were very soft goals and that shows we need to get together and keep working hard.

''But this is exactly the test we needed. We are going into a league where there is going to be a step up in quality and in the kind of football we need to play, and this was a great test for us ahead of that.''

Spanish international Raul Tamudo opened the scoring for Espanyol, striker Jonathan making it 2-0 before Liverpool target Albert Riera grabbed a brace late on.

Swansea should have easier tasks when they take on Peralada tonight and Palamos tomorrow, before another tester against Barcelona's second string on Monday.

''There were many positives to come from the Espanyol game and I'm pleased with the exercise overall,'' Martinez added.

''The last thing that counts in pre-season is the result, but we need to have that winning mentality in every game and we need to try to be as good as we can in every game over the next few days.

''That's how you get up to speed for the Championship.''
