Martinez order
South Wales Evening Post
Roberto Martinez has set his sights on round three ahead of tonight's Carling Cup opener with Brentford at the Liberty Stadium.
Swansea City head into the first-round tie looking for only their second win in the competition since 1999.
The solitary success came under Martinez last season - a 2-0 triumph over Walsall at the Liberty - and the Spaniard wants more progress this time around.
"The club's record in this competition is poor and we need to try to go one better than we did last year," he said.
"Every season we look to improve every aspect of this club so reaching the third round is a good motivation for us."
With no Johnstone's Paint Trophy involvement as a result of promotion and the FAW Premier Cup a thing of the past, the Carling Cup is Swansea's lowest priority this season.
That fact will be reflected on the team sheet this evening, with Martinez expected to make a string of changes to the side which lost at Charlton on Saturday.
But the Swansea manager insists he does not view the Carling Cup as a mere irritation.
"Every game we go into we look to win," he added.
"It's great to be at home in the first round and I'm not really thinking about anything further down the line.
"We will look at it game by game and see what our situation is, and this game provides some of the players who were not involved at Charlton with a chance to show what they can do."

The Martinez reshuffle could involve as many as 10 changes, with Dorus de Vries the only man certain to play again because Swansea are still without a second goalkeeper.
Garry Monk misses out through suspension, meaning a full Swansea debut for Albert Serran, who is available after serving a ban of his own stemming back to his Espanyol days.
Fede Bessone could also make his first competitive appearance in Swansea colours, while Jason Scotland is in line to start as he continues his recovery from stomach surgery.
"We were very happy with what Jason brought to us when he came on at Charlton," Martinez said.
"He showed a lot of quality and we're hopeful that he will be fit for a full 90-minute appearance very soon.
"The next step is probably to play 70 minutes for us and, depending on how that goes, we'll see whether or not he will be fit enough to play a full game against Nottingham Forest."
Brentford, who finished in mid-table in League Two last season, are expected to make changes of their own after a disappointing 1-0 opening-day defeat at Bury.
But Bees boss Andy Scott has a clutch of injury headaches, with strikers Charlie MacDonald and Ross Montague, midfielder Gary Smith and defender Ryan Dickson all out.
"They will come here with nothing to lose and I'm sure their players will enjoy playing at the Liberty," Martinez said.
"They work really hard for each other and will make it difficult for us."
