Swansea City completed a club record signing of Craig Beattie for West Bromwich Albion in a three-year deal worth up to £800,000 on August 27, making his debut in the 1-1 draw with Watford two days later.
The Swans will pay an initial £500,000 for the 25-year-old Scottish international with a further £300,000 due in performance-related add-ons. There is also a 20 per cent sell-on clause in the deal.
The club's previous record transfer fee was £400,000 which was first paid for Ashley Williams and then Nathan Dyer in pre-season.
Beattie arrived at Albion from Celtic in an initial £1.25million deal in July 2007. But he gradually slipped behind Kevin Phillips, Ishmael Miller and Roman Bednar in the striking pecking order during his first few months as a Baggies player, although he came off the bench to score a crucial last-gasp winner at Leicester in December of Albion's Championship-winning season.
A loan move to Preston the following March was cut short by a hamstring injury. But he enjoyed a more productive spell at Crystal Palace at the beginning of the following campaign when he fired five goals in 15 appearances before being recalled in December following Miller's season-ending knee injury.
Beattie stepped off the bench later that month to complete a 2-0 Albion win over Tottenham with a 94th-minute strike - his first Premier League goal.
He joined Sheffield United on loan until the end of the season in February, helping the Blades reach the Championship play-off final where they lost 1-0 to Burnley.
His first-team chances at The Hawthorns were again limited at the start of the season under new head coach Roberto Di Matteo.
In total, Beattie made 41 appearances for the club, including 28 as substitute, and scored eight times.
He made 12 starts for the Swans during the 2009-10 season, plus another 11 from the bench after struggling with injury.
Picked up a calf strain during the pre-season tour of Holland last season which knocked him back, before going on to score four goals from nine starts and 13 substitute appearances.
