The Swans signed the former England Under-17 international from Aldershot Town on a free transfer.
The 22-year-old scored 14 times for the Shots in an attacking central midfield role before his switch the Liberty.
He came through the youth set-up at QPR and made his senior debut as a 16-year-old in October 2004. Then in February 2006 he signed his first pro contract only to struggle with injury and be released a year later to join non-league Wealdstone.
From there he joined Aldershot to write his name in the club's folklore by scoring the Shots' goal in the 1-1 draw at Exeter City which secured them the 2007-08 Blue Square Premier title and promotion to the Football League.
He followed that up by scoring the club's first-ever Football League goal in the 1-0 victory at Accrington Stanley on the opening day of the 2008-09 season.
But Donnelly was finding life hard at Swansea and with only two brief appearances - one in the league and the other in the Carling Cup - under his belt he moved on loan to League Two outfit Wycombe in January 2011 until the end of the season.
