Ferrie strutting his stuff

Posted on: Mon 23 Mar 2009

It was good to see Ferrie Bodde strutting around the place again last week after he flew in from Holland for an assessment on his knee injury.

As you are probably aware by now, Ferrie has been ruled out for the season following a cruciate ligament injury.

He has been having treatment with his friend and ADO Den Haag physio back in Holland where he has been spending the last couple of weeks with his family.

While I have been in constant dialogue with them both, it was time for him to come back to Swansea for a check up and his seven-week assessment with his consultant in London.

The consultant was very impressed with his progress, especially as he spent the first four weeks on crutches and two in a brace.

He has good movement in his leg and it was nice to see him doing some work with our physio on the bike in the gym.

He will be back in Swansea on a more regular basis now as we step up his rehabilitation programme. But while Ferrie is dreaming of a miracle comeback, we are still looking at pre-season before he returns to anything like full-time training.

Marcos Painter (knee) and Matty Collins (ankle) have also been working hard in the gym. They didn't join Ferrie on the bike though; preferring the rowing machines instead.

Marcos had the edge on Matty in the endurance rowing and I'm sure he fancies himself as the next Matthew Pinsent. Olympics here we come - not.

While Matty should be back in a couple of weeks, Marcos still has a long slog ahead of him until pre-season.

But he is progressing really well. Not only is he working hard himself, but full credit must go to physio Ailsa Jones and masseur Oscar Brau.

Marcos has been doing a lot of one-to-one sessions with Ailsa and it is really paying off.

Meanwhile, Tom Butler returned to training on Sunday after struggling with a groin problem which keeps reoccurring.

But he came through fine and should come back into contention next week.

Joe Allen has also been battling against a slight thigh strain picked up in training last week.

He felt it pulling again at Portsmouth and I think we took him off at just the right time.

We'll be assessing him before tonight's game.

I can't finish my notes without saying well done to all the boys for their performance at Fratton Park on Saturday.

It was pleasing to see us match a Premiership side for intensity and fitness, especially as we had no chance of matching them physically.

When we came out for the warm up, Leon Britton, Joe Allen and Nathan Dyer thought they were in the 'Land of the Giants' with the likes of Crouch, Kanu, Campbell and Distin.

But it proves that a good little 'un will always beat a big 'un!
