Swansea City's involvement in the FA Youth Cup is over for another year following defeat against West Bromwich Albion.

The Premier League Academy side struck twice inside the first half-hour through Kayleden Brown and Saido Berahino to leave their hosts with an uphill task for the remaining hour of this clash.

Despite their attempts to claw their way back into this game Berahino made the game safe for the Baggies when he fired home a third late on.

West Brom were causing the home sides problems with their physical presence from the start but Tony Pennock's side kept the Baggies at bay until 10 minutes into this game.

Striker Chris Wood, who could appear at next summer's World Cup with New Zealand, fired his effort wide while Burundi-born Saido Berahino saw his shot pushed wide by Rhys Wilson two minutes later.

Wood connected with the resulting header, which deflected wide off the back of Ben Davies, but Jordan Smith came close with the hosts' first effort on goal after 16 minutes when his drive was blocked by skipper Paul Dowling.

Back came the Baggies and after Wilson collected a Berahino strike they took the lead through Wales Under-19 international Kayleden Brown; the wide-man careering into the box after playing a one-two with Sam Mantom and firing low into the net.

Anthony Finselbach almost levelled matters as his wicked 23rd minute strike from distance fell just wide of Ryan Allsop's post, but it wasn't long before the PremierLeagueAcademy side extended their lead.

George Thorne, who played for the Albion first-team at the weekend, played an instinctive ball into the path of Saido Berahino who slid home from close-range.

Allsop was rarely tested between the sticks but his side had some defending to do as the half drew to a close.

Albion had 11 players behind the ball when Finselbach fired his free-kick into the wall but Kurtis March came agonisingly close to halving the deficit in stoppage-time, turning his man inside the area and firing low across goal and just past the post.

The former Cardiff City youngster found himself through on goal again during the early stages of the second-half, attempting to race on to the end of an Adam Orme through ball but was second best to England Under-17 'keeper Allsop.

Chris Wood was still searching for a goal and on 54 minutes was granted a fine opportunity inside the area, but a slight deflection carried it wide, while opening goalscorer Brown suffered the same fate quarter-of-an-hour later when he failed to hit the target.

The Swans continued to seek a way back into this game and with 14 minutes left Jordan Smith played a dangerous free-kick into the area which evaded everybody and Thomas Gregg Lopes Da Silva failed to keep it in play, while West Brom broke forward and on two separate occasions came close to adding a third.

Both efforts fell to Chris Wood, the first well saved by Rhys Wilson and the second was fired well over from a matter of yards with just the 'keeper to beat.

They did get their third goal seven minutes from the end - Berahino notching his second of the night with the aid of the post and a lucky deflection off Joe Walsh.

The game may have been over but the home side still had time to put some late pressure on the Baggies' box.

Lopes Da Silva sent Adam Orme on his way into the area but his shot was blocked, and as the ball found its way back to the former Sporting Lisbon product he struck it first time but couldn't hit the target on a disappointing night for Swansea City.
